Creativity and artistic excellence is an essence of the identity of the river city of Whanganui, voted New Zealand's most beautiful city. Located on the Tasman Sea in some of New Zealand's most beautiful and productive landscapes, our rapidly growing district has one of the most temperate climates in the World. Our economy is demonstrating consistently above average GDP and income growth, and our economic development agency and its partners are driving and supporting major initiatives of which the creative industries are a star performer.
Our vibrant art scene is experiencing a renaissance in skill and confidence as Whanganui becomes a cultural and commercial hub for New Zealand's creative industries and this has created an opportunity for an innovative and creative Strategic Lead to make their mark in this key role.
Our industry is extremely diverse and encompasses glass art, visual arts, studio ceramics, toi Maori, drama, design, sculpture, literature and photographic art. In many of these areas, Whanganui art is not able to be matched elsewhere in the country in terms of quality and uniqueness. Artists have taken advantage of our comparatively low living costs and attractive built and natural environment to set up businesses while connecting with others in similar industries, sparking ideas off each other and making Whanganui their home.
The $17 billion creative sector is being supported nationally for its capacity to generate employment and grow innovation in business, and Whanganui is showing how this can be done sustainably by working together as a group of innovative creative industries.
Driven by the Whanganui District Council's Arts and Culture Strategic Plan 2019-2029, this exciting role facilitates initiatives that ensure the district and city are full of opportunities that nurtures the creative industries and entire artistic sector of today and tomorrow. It also pulls all this potential together and recognises the critical role arts and culture play in positioning Whanganui as a liveable, exciting place to be.
